Copehnagen City Hall

Set on Copenhagen’s City Hall Square, this iconic and beautiful building was built in the years 1892-1905 and was designed by the architect Martin Nyrop with inspiration from Siena City Hall in Italy. In recent years, the City Hall has been featured in Danish hit TV series like "The Killing" and "Borgen".

City Hall is one of the tallest buildings in Copenhagen, and offers a great view over the city from its 105.6 meter-high tower.

The story of the secret City Hall Pancake

In 1928 the Belgian King visited the City Hall of Copenhagen. Before the king arrived, someone saw that we lacked a dessert for the evening dinner and asked the restaurant Store Kro, who was delivering the dinner to come up with an idea. What do they like in Belgium if not waffles and pancakes one of the chefs asked, and came up with the City Hall pancake. The name of the chef was Philip Olsen. He was 30 years of age. For some reason he kept the recipe a secret. In 1967, when Copenhagen had its 800-years anniversary, the City Hall pancake was served for thousands of citizens during the festivities and the word spread: “Have you tried the City Hall pancake, made on a secret recipe?” Philip Olsen kept the secret, also after 1967, and we have an article from 1978 where he still is making the pancakes. This is, on the day 50 years after he created the first pancake and he is 80 years old. He comes home after work, sits down in his armchair to rest, his wife next to him and from the article we can read that not even his wife knows the real recipe. Philip Olsen dies in the early 1980’ies. The truth is, that the City Hall never knew its recipe and haven’t made a real City Hall pancake since 1981. Today there exists many stories about the secret recipe. The City Hall guards who also do guided tours are aware of two valid sources – one of which have agreed to testament the recipe, written by Philip Olsen himself if we agree to hide it in one of the City Halls old chests; the one with a secret lock where it is to be guarded by the City Hall guards and kept secret forever.
